About 93% of the recipe is beef tallow, a traditional fat that makes a hard, mild, creamy bar. I add a little coconut oil to gently boost the cleansing and a touch of castor oil for a richer lather — nothing fussy, nothing unnecessary. A small amount of citric acid helps prevent soap scum in hard water and keeps the bar from going rancid through its long cure.

Instead of plain distilled water, I use my own herbal hydrosol — slowly distilled from rosemary, lavender, lemongrass, peppermint, rose petals and lemon balm grown in my garden — plus fresh-harvested aloe vera. Because the hydrosol carries the herbs' natural oils, you may notice a very light, natural scent. There are no added fragrance oils and no dyes
